Like many individuals that are vetting an LMS, xAPI may be piquing your curiosity, however without any real knowledge of why xAPI is a desirable feature or what it truly means in the world of eLearning how do you know exactly what you are looking for?
What is xAPI?
As defined by Wikipedia, “The Experience API (xAPI) is an e-learning software specification that allows learning content and learning systems to speak to each other in a manner that records and tracks all types of learning experiences. Learning experiences are recorded in a Learning Record Store (LRS). LRSs can exist within traditional Learning Management Systems (LMSs) or on their own.”
…So, what does this mean?
With quite a lot of buzz and not a lot of rock-solid answers (or sources in which to find them), we set out to confirm and/or debunk some of the rumors surrounding xAPI, its mechanics, practical uses, position in the current eLearning environment, comparison with SCORM, design techniques, and development considerations. We wanted to back-up (or deny) some of the claims we’re hearing with a concrete objective analysis in hopes to address the statement, “xAPI is the future of eLearning.”
